Where do we go from here?

We must build a modern, progressive, responsive organization that non-union workers want to join and that our members proudly support. Where do we go from here? The best way to build such an organization is to first remember where we’ve been – building trade unions once commanded a monopoly of ICI construction in British Columbia.

In the early 1980s we saw the rise of the neo-conservatives and the election of the Socreds, as well as the rise of the open shop movement and the emergence of alternative construction unions like CLAC & CISIWU. And we witnessed the failure of the building trades unions to change with the times.

This led to a slow and steady decline of the power of construction unions. What was once a monopoly has been reduced to a point where today the traditional building trades have a mere 10 to 15 per cent of the ICI construction market. Make no mistake about it – carpenters, construction workers, and workers in general have suffered greatly because of this decline.

The rest of Canada, with the notable exception of southern Ontario and the province of Quebec, has been unable to shake a trend that started with Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Regan and continues with Stephen Harper and George Bush.

We have to do things much differently if we are to once again achieve the gains our members deserve and to earn the trust of a majority of construction workers. On page 2, I have identified the immediate priorities that CMAW must address. Thanks for taking the time to read the first edition of our new newsletter, and work safe!

fuck dude i am still laughing! don't know if it is the stupid shit Jan wrote or the stupid look on his face but i am in tears. doc should post mugshots from prison beside his lost the election i am president only by injunction, shit eating grin photo so we can have another big laugh next month. cmaw.blogspot.com needs a contest also. 1st prize awarded to whomever can answer the $64 000.00 question. how come we let a convicted armed robber end up the president of this union when he lost the election by 60%? injunction or judge is not an acceptable answer since most reputable organizations require bonding for these positions. post your answers to win! help us fight the corporate power and impeach jan nostrel so we can elect someone with balls who can take on coles! just cuz jan sucked balls in prison doesn't mean he has any!

Jan Noster is a loser from Calgary. He is such a loser that he loses his election but takes the office anyway. I don't think injunctions are democratic. In this case it is away around democracy. Jan the members don't want you, that is why you didn't get elected. You are dumb, have no class, and a violent criminal record. Since I met you all I have heard about is the undemocratic International and how we need a change. You didn't even take a page out of there book, you burnt it. Instead you plagerize clacs book and promote clac rhetoric about marketshare. The only way to win back the work is to work for less. So Jan would have us believe. Lets get rid of this loser now!! Before he steals the rest of the pension or assists clac in stealing the rest of the work. $DISCLAIMER$ The following post may be considered unintelligent by the coles (dave/josh) or the noses (nostrel). Please don't let these goofs make your opinion for you, look at the results of there work over the years and ask yourself why things would change now?

Jan is not fat, just a poor example for a carpenter - so leave him alone, he did his time, he paid his debt and he deserves his International pension just like Haggarty. I voted for Jan and he's my kind of guy so back off you Edmonton jerk-offs!

Does Martin Piper know that you waste the members time and money posting on a blog that maybe 30 people participate in ?
Go organize another window plant and keep your nose out of BC.

He's right you guys sound like a bunch of prairie chickens trying to get up enough couraqe to cross the road.
What are you afraid of? change?

Jimmie Smythe said...

You are talking about the CEEP dominated unelected eBoard correct? Coles Clones? Coles Erection Pullers - slap their CEPP's you mean.

What am I afraid of? Well lets see what has transpired with CMAW, do i have a right to vote on collective agreements that affect me,
(pulp survival agreement) NO I don't.Do I have a say in elected officers of CMAW, NO.

Anonymous said...

So we want to leave the international because they would'nt let the members vote on collective agreements or elect our own officers, at least they told us this up front.CMAW on the other hand lied to us, Pulp fiction agreement no vote for the members, election of officers Jan and Pat don't get elected at convention yet they spend members money going to court and remain in office. So exactly why should we, the members believe that the CEP CMAW are our saviours.

welcome to BC where we give criminals a future and we destroy the future of injured workers Jan nostral did not get this power on his own the scum that were not really union they cared for money and nothing else they gave him and the rest of the scum the backing they needed.HONOR Pride did not enter into it.If you are really union you care about all workers union and nonunion. Tommy Douglas cared about all people not just the ones that voted for him. What better example to follow then his.
